Once per policy period. Not for CI exclusion list. Reinstated SI not carried forward.

RTA Trigger· Once/Year· Plan B
🚗

RTA Reinstatement — Case Illustration (from Prospectus Section 1.3.4)

  • Case I — RTA exhausts SI → Reinstatement happens:SI ₹5L. Claim 1 (disease): ₹2L → ₹3L remaining. Claim 2 (RTA): ₹4L → ₹3L admissible (SI exhausted). SI reinstated: ₹3L (balance prior to RTA). Claim 3 (disease): ₹1L → ₹1L paid from reinstated SI. This case demonstrates the RTA reinstatement: the disease-first claim, then RTA exhaustion, triggers reinstatement for the subsequent disease claim.
  • Case II — Disease exhausts SI after RTA → NO reinstatement:SI ₹5L. Claim 1 (RTA): ₹4L → ₹1L remaining. SI NOT exhausted by RTA. Claim 2 (disease): ₹2L → ₹1L admissible (SI exhausted). SI NOT reinstated because SI was not exhausted BY RTA. The RTA reinstatement only triggers if the RTA claim itself exhausts the SI — not if disease claims after an RTA exhaust the remaining SI.
  • Practical significance for seniors:Road accidents disproportionately affect elderly pedestrians and passengers — India's road accident statistics show seniors are over-represented in hospitalisation severity. The RTA reinstatement in Plan B ensures that a serious road accident claim doesn't leave the senior uninsured for subsequent illnesses in the same policy year — an especially important protection given that elderly RTA victims often require multiple hospitalisations in the recovery period.

DM/HTN Day 1 Add-On Is Critical for Most Senior Citizens

  • Why almost every buyer should consider the DM/HTN add-on:India's 60–80 age group has ~40–50% prevalence of either Type 2 Diabetes, Hypertension, or both. The base has a 24-month PED wait — meaning diabetes and hypertension complications are excluded for 2 years. For most senior citizens, this 2-year exclusion is the biggest financial risk. The DM/HTN add-on eliminates this risk from Day 1 with a co-pay: 10% (DM only), 10% (HTN only), 25% (both).
  • Practical example:A 66-year-old with T2D and HTN is admitted for a diabetic foot infection costing ₹2L. Without add-on (year 1): ₹2L fully excluded. With DM+HTN add-on: 25% co-pay = ₹50,000 out-of-pocket; the insurer pays ₹1.5L. After 36 months: no co-pay at all.
  • OPD add-on equally valuable:Senior citizens average 12–18 OPD visits per year (cardiologist, diabetologist, orthopedist, ophthalmologist). Without OPD add-on: all consultation and diagnostic costs are out-of-pocket. With OPD add-on: covered up to the annual limit. For frequent-OPD seniors, this can offset a significant portion of annual health expenditure.

Cashless + Reimbursement· TPA or Direct· 72-Hour Intimation

How to File an Claim

can be serviced by TPA (cashless + reimbursement) or directly by Company (reimbursement only). "Cashless facility is available, if opted for TPA service, subject to prior approval by the TPA." For elderly who prefer cashless: choose TPA service at policy purchase. For reimbursement-only: Company direct service is cheaper (TPA charges waived).

  1. Choose TPA or Direct at Policy Inception — Affects Cashless Availability

"The proposer has the option of claims being serviced by TPA (in which case both Cashless Facility and Reimbursement Facility will be available) or the Company (in which case Cashless Facility shall not be available)." If the senior citizen wants cashless hospitalisation: TPA service must be opted at policy purchase. Cannot switch mid-term. Direct Company service: lower premium (no TPA charges) but no cashless.

  2. Cashless: Intimate TPA 72 Hours Prior (Planned) / 24 Hours After (Emergency)

"For planned hospitalisation, intimation is to be sent to the TPA/Company in advance (72 hours prior). In case of an emergency hospitalisation, intimation is to be sent to the TPA/Company within 24 hours of admission." Cashless: at network hospitals only. Check network hospital list via TPA or. Hospital insurance desk submits pre-authorisation request to TPA.

  3. Reimbursement: Collect All Documents Before Leaving Hospital

"Before leaving the hospital, Discharge Summary, investigation report and other relevant documents (Claim form – Part A& Part B) may be obtained from the hospital authorities." Critical for elderly patients: family member should manage document collection at discharge. 4. Submit Within 15 Days of Discharge (and Within 15 Days of Post-Hosp Treatment)

Two deadlines: 1) Main claim documents: 15 days from discharge. 2) Post-hospitalisation expenses: 15 days from end of 60-day post-hosp period. Separate claim for Plan B's doctor home visit/nurse/aya charges during post-hosp.

  5. Plan B Special Claims — Hospital Cash, Home Care, Funeral

Senior Citizen Mediclaim Policy — Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

"Policy can be proposed by: (i) Any Senior Citizen (i.e., aged between 60 to 80 years). (ii) Son or Daughter for parents, where at least one parent is Senior Citizen (i.e., aged between 60 to 80 years). No one else can be Proposer for this Policy."

Yes — adult children (son or daughter) of senior citizen parents can and very commonly do purchase on behalf of their parents. The son or daughter is the proposer; the parents are the insured persons. Key rules:

Individual Basis: Son/daughter proposing for either one parent or both parents (each with their own SI)
Floater Basis: Son/daughter proposing for both parents on a shared SI (at least one parent 60–80; other parent 50–80 at inception)

What the son/daughter cannot do:
→ Cannot add themselves to their parents' policy (different age group)
→ Cannot add siblings or other relatives to the policy
→ Cannot propose for extended family (aunt/uncle, grandparents through marriage, etc.)

Premium responsibility: The son/daughter pays the premium and can claim Section 80D deduction for health insurance paid for parents. If parents are senior citizens (60+): ₹50,000 Section 80D deduction available to the son/daughter.

Practical guidance for Mumbai/metro families: Many adult children purchase for parents living in a different city. The pre-policy check-up must be conducted in the parents' city within 30 days of proposal submission. Call 022 4302 0000 — Probitas can help coordinate the check-up, paperwork, and policy issuance remotely.
"Pre Policy Check Up: For Whom – For all individuals irrespective of age, for fresh proposal.50% of the expenses incurred for pre policy check-up shall be reimbursed, if the proposal is accepted."

Why the check-up is mandatory:
The 60–80 age group is the insurer's highest-risk health insurance cohort. Unlike younger buyers where a medical history self-declaration may suffice, senior citizen proposals require objective medical evidence to assess underwriting risk. This protects both the insurer (accurate risk pricing) and the insured (ensures their specific conditions are properly disclosed and documented at inception — preventing future claim disputes).

8 mandatory tests:
1. Physical examination by MD (Medicine)-qualified doctor
2. HbA1c — screens for diabetes
3. Lipid profile — screens for cardiovascular risk
4. Serum creatinine — screens for kidney function
5. Urine routine & microscopic — systemic health screening
6. ECG — cardiac arrhythmia/prior MI screening
7. Eye check-up including retinoscopy — unique to
8. Any other investigation required by Company

The 50% reimbursement:
If the insurer accepts your proposal and premium is realised: they refund 50% of the check-up cost. Budget ₹3,000–5,000 for the full panel. 50% = ₹1,500–2,500 back. Net cost: ₹1,500–2,500 for complete senior health screening — excellent value even if not buying the policy.

Reports must not be older than 30 days from the proposal submission date. Call 022 4302 0000 to coordinate the check-up timing with proposal submission.
Plan A covers the core benefits. Plan B adds 5 additional benefits exclusive to seniors: Hospital Cash (Days 4–8), Doctor Home Visit/Nurse/Aya/Attendant during post-hospitalisation, Funeral Expenses, RTA Reinstatement, and 6-monthly health check-up.

The 5 Plan B-only benefits and when they matter:

1. Hospital Cash (Days 4–8, max 5 days): If your parent has extended hospitalisations (surgery, stroke recovery, major illness), hospital cash covers attendant food, non-medical supplies, and incidental expenses. Relevant for any parent with chronic conditions requiring multi-day admissions.

2. Doctor Home Visit/Nurse/Aya/Attendant (post-discharge): If your parent has restricted mobility after surgery (hip replacement, knee surgery, stroke recovery), the discharge summary will confirm this. Plan B then covers the cost of home nursing visits, aya charges, and attendant care at home during the 60-day post-discharge period. This can be ₹10,000–30,000 in saved costs.

3. Funeral Expenses: Sensitive but realistic — if the senior passes away during hospitalisation, Plan B provides a defined funeral expense benefit. Reduces financial stress on the family at a difficult time.

4. RTA Reinstatement: If the senior parent is a pedestrian, uses public transport, or travels by car frequently, RTA risk is real. Plan B ensures a serious road accident doesn't leave them uninsured for subsequent health events in the same year.

5. 6-Monthly Health Check-Up: ₹1,000/person every 6 claim-free months for OPD consultations + diagnostics. For active senior citizens doing regular specialist check-ups, this offsets a meaningful portion of check-up costs.

Call 022 4302 0000 for premium comparison between Plan A and Plan B at your parent's age and SI level.
"Mental Illness Cover: Major Depressive Disorder - when the patient is aggressive or violent. Acute psychotic conditions - aggressive/violent behaviour or hallucinations, incoherent talking or agitation. Schizophrenia - esp. Psychotic episodes. Bipolar disorder - manic phase."

The strict qualifying criteria:
NOT all mental illness is covered — only the 4 listed conditions AND the patient must simultaneously exhibit TWO OR MORE of these traits:
→ Suicidality
→ Aggression
→ Violent behaviour harmful to patient or others
→ Not responding to OPD drugs/treatments/therapy

What this means practically:
✅ 72-year-old with Major Depressive Disorder becoming violent + not responding to OPD treatment: COVERED (2 traits: violent + OPD non-response)
✅ 68-year-old with Schizophrenia having a psychotic episode with hallucinations + agitation: COVERED (Acute psychotic + behavioural criteria)
✅ 74-year-old with Bipolar in manic phase, aggressive + suicidal: COVERED (2 traits)
❌ 70-year-old with depression, feeling sad and withdrawn but not aggressive: NOT COVERED (doesn't meet behavioural criteria)
❌ OPD counselling for anxiety or depression: NOT COVERED (outpatient excluded)

Treatment facility requirement: Hospital categorised as Mental Health Establishment, under a Mental Health Professional (psychiatrist or equivalent). Regular hospitals without dedicated mental health departments cannot admit claims under this section.

Domiciliary mental illness: Explicitly excluded — "Any treatment undertaken as Domiciliary hospitalisation shall not be covered"

Call 022 4302 0000 for guidance on specific mental health scenarios for your parent.
"Optional covers like OPD, Critical illness, Personal accident & coverage of pre-existing Diabetes and Hypertension." The DM/HTN add-on provides Day 1 coverage (bypassing the 24-month PED wait) for pre-existing diabetes and/or hypertension, with a co-payment.

Co-payment structure:
DM only: 10% co-pay on all DM-related admissible claims
HTN only: 10% co-pay on all HTN-related admissible claims
DM + HTN (both): 25% co-pay on related claims
After 36 months continuous coverage with add-on: co-pay removed + extra premium removed

Why this is especially critical for buyers:
India's 60–80 age group has the highest prevalence of T2D and HTN of any age cohort — estimated 40–60% of senior citizens have one or both. The base 's 24-month PED wait means a fresh buyer's diabetes or hypertension is excluded for 2 years. For a 72-year-old with T2D: 2 years of diabetes-related hospitalisations are 100% out-of-pocket without the add-on.

What the add-on covers:
→ All diabetic complications: diabetic nephropathy, diabetic neuropathy, diabetic retinopathy, diabetic foot, diabetic ketoacidosis
→ All hypertensive complications: hypertensive heart disease, hypertensive nephropathy, stroke from HTN
→ Co-morbidity admissions where DM/HTN is a contributing diagnosis
→ From DAY 1 — no waiting period

Call 022 4302 0000 for the DM/HTN add-on premium for your parent's specific profile (DM only/HTN only/both) and SI level.
