How Claims Are Calculated

Sum Insured, IDV & Claim Calculation

💰 Own Damage — IDV Basis

For OD claims, the cycle's Insured Declared Value (IDV) is the maximum claim payable. For partial damage, actual repair cost (minus depreciation on parts) is paid. For total loss or theft, the full IDV minus deductible is paid.

🏛️ Third-Party Liability

TP claims are assessed by a court / Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT). The insurer pays the liability as determined — subject to policy terms and statutory limits.

🧍 Personal Accident — CSI Basis

PA claims are paid as a percentage of the Capital Sum Insured (CSI) chosen by you at inception. Death and PTD attract 100% CSI; loss of one limb / eye attracts 50% CSI; PPD attracts the percentage as per the schedule.

⚖️ Under-Insurance — Average Clause

If your declared IDV is lower than the actual market value of the cycle at the time of claim, the condition of average applies — your OD claim is reduced proportionally. Always insure at 100% of current market value.

📋 Personal Accident (Section C) — Disablement Benefit Schedule

Nature of Loss / Disablement% of CSI Payable
Death of insured rider due to accident100%
Permanent Total Disablement (PTD)100%
Loss of two limbs OR two eyes OR one limb and one eye100%
Loss of one limb OR one eye50%
Permanent Partial Disablement (PPD)As per schedule %

Policy Conditions

Special Conditions

The following 12 conditions are binding under the Pedal Cycle Insurance Policy. Non-compliance may result in claim rejection or policy voiding.

1

The cycle must be accurately described in the policy schedule — make, model, frame number, and IDV must be correctly declared at inception.

2

IDV = current market value at inception — agreed between insurer and insured. IDV cannot be altered during the policy period.

3

Any modification to the cycle must be declared to the insurer. Undeclared modifications may void coverage for claims arising from those modifications.

4

The insured must take all reasonable steps to protect the cycle from loss or damage. Failure to do so (wilful neglect) may void the claim.

5

In case of theft, a Police FIR must be lodged immediately and a copy submitted with the claim. A non-traceable certificate from police is also required.

6

In case of accident or damage, do not authorise repairs without prior insurer survey or approval (for claims above the applicable threshold).

7

The cycle must not be used for hire, reward, racing, or any commercial purpose not declared at inception — such use voids the OD and TP cover.

8

The insured rider must hold a valid licence if required — applicable for any motorised variant of pedal cycles where a licence is mandated by law.

9

Transfer of ownership: the policy must be transferred to the new owner within 14 days of sale. Failure to do so voids coverage for the new owner.

10

The insurer reserves the right to inspect the cycle at any time during the policy period to verify the declared details and condition.

11

Subrogation: on settlement of any OD or TP claim, all rights of recovery against responsible third parties are automatically transferred to the insurer.

12

Renewal: IDV is reassessed at each annual renewal based on the depreciation schedule. The cycle must be re-declared to confirm current market value.

Some Myths about Pedal Cycle Insurance

Frequently Asked Questions

All types of pedal cycles (bicycles) are covered — city / commuter cycles, mountain bikes, road bikes, children's cycles, cargo bicycles, and any non-motorised pedal-powered cycle used in India. The cycle's make, model, and frame number must be declared at inception.
IDV (Insured Declared Value) is the current market value of your cycle — the maximum amount claimable in case of total loss or theft. It is calculated as: Purchase Price minus Depreciation (as per the depreciation schedule). For example, a cycle purchased for ₹20,000 that is 1.5 years old would have an IDV of ₹20,000 × (1 − 20%) = ₹16,000 (approximate). IDV is agreed at inception and cannot be changed mid-policy.
Yes — theft is covered under Section A (Own Damage). In case of theft, you must lodge a Police FIR immediately and also obtain a non-traceable certificate from the police once the cycle is not recovered within the stipulated time. The claim payable is the IDV minus the compulsory deductible (₹100).
Yes — Third-Party liability is covered under Section B. It covers legal liability for bodily injury or death caused to a third party, and damage to third-party property — arising from the use of the insured cycle. Legal costs incurred with the insurer's written consent are also covered. This section is available as a standalone cover or combined with OD and PA.
Under Section C (Personal Accident), the insured rider is covered for: Death — 100% of CSI; Permanent Total Disablement — 100% of CSI; Loss of two limbs / eyes — 100% of CSI; Loss of one limb or one eye — 50% of CSI; Permanent Partial Disablement — as per the schedule percentage. The CSI is chosen by you at inception (e.g. ₹1 lakh or ₹2 lakh, subject to insurer limits).
Standard accessories that are permanently fitted to the cycle (such as mudguards, lights, baskets, and locks) are typically covered as part of the cycle's declared IDV. Accessories or add-ons not declared at inception may not be covered. Confirm the list of covered accessories with Probitas at the time of policy issuance.
The policy covers the cycle irrespective of who is riding it — as long as the rider is not excluded under the policy terms (e.g. not under the influence of alcohol/drugs, not using it for racing or commercial hire). The claim will be assessed based on the circumstances of the accident. Personal Accident (Section C) covers only the insured rider named in the policy.
Yes — Section A explicitly covers loss or damage while the cycle is in transit by Road, Rail, Inland Waterway, Lift, Elevator, or Air. So if your cycle is damaged while being transported in a car boot, on a train rack, or in a flight cargo hold, it is covered under the policy.
Yes — used cycles can be insured. The IDV for a used cycle is determined based on the current market value after applying the applicable depreciation from the depreciation schedule. The cycle's make, model, frame number, and purchase details must be declared. There is no restriction on insuring second-hand cycles under this policy.
