This the insurer Dog Insurance policy covers the DEATH of the dog — paying out the sum insured (market value of the dog) if the dog dies from accident, disease, or surgical complication. It does NOT cover veterinary treatment bills, diagnostic costs, surgery costs, hospitalisation, or ongoing medical expenses. For vet bill coverage, a separate Pet Health Insurance policy is required. Who Can Apply

Eligibility & Sum Insured

📜

KCI / NKC Pedigree Certificate — Mandatory. No Pedigree = No Insurance.

Only pedigreed dogs registered with the Kennel Club of India (KCI) or National Kennel Club (NKC) are eligible. A valid KCI / NKC Pedigree Certificate is mandatory at inception. Without a recognised pedigree certificate from a canine registry, the dog cannot be insured. Mongrel / mixed-breed / stray dogs are NOT eligible under this policy.

💉

Vaccination Record — Mandatory at Inception

Proof of current vaccination against Distemper (D), Parvovirus (P), Hepatitis (H), Leptospirosis (L), Parainfluenza (Pi), and Rabies (R) must be submitted at inception. Vaccination lapses may void claims for vaccine-preventable diseases (Distemper, Parvovirus, Rabies). Always keep your dog's vaccination record up to date throughout the policy period.

📡

Microchip (ISO 11784/11785) — RFID Identification Mandatory

The insured dog must be identified by microchip (ISO 11784/11785 standard 15-digit number) or ear tattoo number. The microchip number must match the KCI / NKC pedigree certificate. Dogs without a microchip may be required to be microchipped before the policy is issued. Microchip is the gold-standard identification for pedigreed dogs in India.

🐕 Who is Eligible?

  • Individual pet owners, breeders, kennel operators, security firms, police departments
  • Dog must have valid KCI / NKC pedigree certificate
  • Dog must be identified by microchip (ISO standard) or ear tattoo
  • Dog must be in good health — veterinary health certificate mandatory at inception
  • Vaccination record (DPHLPiR) mandatory
  • Age: minimum 3 months (after basic vaccinations); maximum typically 8 years
  • Dogs above 8 years: insured with special endorsement and higher premium loading

Coverage Under Dog Insurance

What is Covered — Three Cause Categories

Dog Insurance covers death from three categories: accidental death, disease death, and surgical complication death. All claims require a veterinary post-mortem certificate. 24-hour notification is critical. Do NOT cremate before vet examination.

🚨

Notify Within 24 HOURS of Death — Do NOT Cremate Before Vet Examination

Death of the insured dog must be notified to Probitas on 022 4302 0000 within 24 HOURS. Do NOT cremate, bury, or dispose of the dog before the veterinarian examines the body and certifies cause of death. Photograph the dog before any disposal. For road accidents: lodge a Police FIR immediately. For disease deaths: inform the treating vet immediately.

⚠️

Do NOT Cremate or Dispose of the Dog Before Veterinary Examination

The deceased dog must NOT be cremated, buried, or otherwise disposed of before a government-licensed / registered veterinarian examines the body and issues a Post-Mortem / Cause of Death Certificate. Early cremation or disposal voids the claim. Photograph the dog before any intervention and call Probitas on 022 4302 0000 first.

🚔

Police FIR Required for Road Accident Death Claims

For road accident deaths, a Police FIR or police incident report from the nearest police station is required along with the veterinary cause of death certificate. The FIR establishes the accidental nature of death and is mandatory for road accident claims. Lodge the FIR at the nearest police station before calling Probitas.

💉

Vaccination Lapse Warning — Claims May Be Voided for Vaccine-Preventable Diseases

If the dog's vaccination against Distemper, Parvovirus, or Rabies has lapsed at the time of death from that specific vaccine-preventable disease — the claim for that disease may be voided. Annual vaccination boosters must be maintained throughout the policy period. Submit updated vaccination records at each renewal.

⚠️

Mortality Policy — NOT Health Insurance: Veterinary treatment bills, diagnostic costs, surgery costs, hospitalisation charges, and medication costs are NOT covered under this policy. This policy only pays out the sum insured on the dog's death. For vet bill coverage, contact Probitas on 022 4302 0000 to explore separate Pet Health Insurance options.

🚗

Accidental Death

  • Road accident / vehicular collision — Police FIR required
  • Electrocution from live wires / electric fences
  • Drowning in rivers, ponds, swimming pools
  • Lightning strike causing death
  • Fall from height or into a pit / well
  • Fatal animal attack (other animal causing death)
  • Accidental injury during shows / training / security work
🦠

Disease Death

  • Canine Distemper — neurological / respiratory; common fatal disease
  • Canine Parvovirus (CPV) — fatal in puppies / unvaccinated dogs
  • Infectious Canine Hepatitis (ICH), Leptospirosis, Coronavirus
  • Rabies — invariably fatal once symptomatic
  • GDV / Bloat — fatal emergency in large breeds (GSD, Great Dane)
  • Cancer / neoplasia, CKD (kidney failure), DCM (heart failure)
  • Any other disease certified by a registered vet
🏥

Surgical Complication Death

  • Death from a medically necessary surgical procedure by a registered vet where the dog does not survive
  • Anaesthetic death during a required operation
  • Emergency C-section complications (breeding bitch)
  • Post-surgical complications directly caused by the operation

How Claims Are Calculated

Indemnity & Claim Calculation

🐕 Dog Death Claim Formula

Claim = Sum Insured (agreed market value at inception) − Compulsory Excess

The sum insured is the agreed market value of the dog at inception — assessed and certified by a government-licensed / registered veterinarian. This is a fixed agreed-value policy — the full SI is paid on death (minus excess), regardless of the dog's condition at the time of death.

🏆 Show / Championship Dogs — How Value is Determined

  • KCI Championship wins and show titles — each championship adds premium to assessed value
  • Studbook entries and breeding records
  • Import parentage / FCI-registered bloodline
  • Age (peak show years: 2–5 years)
  • Government-licensed vet assessment confirmed with KCI show records

No Salvage Interest — Dog's Remains Vest in the Owner

Unlike cattle or livestock insurance (where the insurer has a salvage interest in the carcass / hide / meat), the insurer has NO salvage interest in the deceased dog's body. The dog's remains stay with the owner — no deduction for salvage value from the claim. The full SI minus compulsory excess is paid. The owner may cremate or bury the dog after veterinary examination is complete.

⚠️ Treatment Costs NOT Claimable

This policy pays out the sum insured on death — it does NOT reimburse any veterinary treatment costs incurred before the dog died. Even if you spent ₹50,000 on treating your dog before it died, only the sum insured (minus excess) is payable — not the treatment costs. For vet bill coverage, a separate Pet Health Insurance policy is required.

Policy Conditions

Special Conditions

The following 12 conditions are binding under the insurer Dog Insurance. Condition 1 (Pedigree Certificate), Condition 4 (Vaccination), Condition 5 (24-hour notification), and Condition 6 (Do NOT cremate before vet exam) are the most critical.

1

Pedigree Certificate Mandatory: A valid KCI / NKC pedigree certificate must be submitted at inception. Without a pedigree certificate from a recognised canine registry, the dog cannot be insured. Mongrel / mixed-breed / stray dogs are NOT eligible.

2

Veterinary Health Certificate at Inception: A health certificate from a government-licensed / registered vet — confirming breed, age, health condition, vaccination status, microchip / ear tattoo number, and assessed market value — is mandatory at inception.

3

Microchip / Ear Tattoo Identification: The dog must be identified by microchip (ISO 11784/11785 — 15-digit number) or ear tattoo number. The identification number must match the KCI / NKC pedigree certificate. Dogs without microchip may be required to be chipped before policy issuance.

4

Vaccination Record Mandatory: Proof of current vaccination against D, P, H, L, Pi, and R must be submitted at inception. Vaccination lapses may void claims for vaccine-preventable diseases. Always maintain annual vaccination schedules throughout the policy period.

5

Notification Within 24 HOURS of Death: Death must be notified to Probitas (022 4302 0000) within 24 HOURS. Do NOT cremate or dispose of the dog before vet examination. For road accidents: lodge Police FIR immediately. For disease: inform treating vet immediately.

6

Do NOT Cremate / Dispose Before Vet Examination: The deceased dog must NOT be cremated, buried, or disposed of before a government-licensed / registered vet examines the body and issues a cause of death certificate. Early cremation voids the claim.

7

Post-Mortem Certificate Mandatory: All death claims require a Post-Mortem / Cause of Death certificate from a government-licensed or registered vet. Private vet certificates are accepted for dog insurance. The insurer may also appoint their own veterinary surveyor to verify.

8

Road Accident Claims — Police FIR Required: For accidental death from road accident, a Police FIR or police incident report is required along with the veterinary cause of death certificate. FIR must be from the nearest police station.

9

Age Verification: Dog's age is established by KCI / NKC registration date and vet certificate. Dogs insured beyond maximum eligible age (typically 8 years) require special endorsement and command higher premium loading.

10

Single Dog Per Policy: Each dog is insured under a separate policy. Breeders / kennels with multiple dogs may obtain a fleet / group policy by listing all dogs individually with separate identification for each.

11

Annual Renewal — Reassessment of Value: At each annual renewal, the dog's market value is reassessed (generally declining with age). A fresh veterinary certificate confirming current health, updated vaccination status, and revised market value is required at renewal.

12

Cancellation: Either party may cancel the policy on 7 days' written notice. Premium refunded on short-period scale for unexpired term. No refund if a claim has already been paid during the policy period.

🩺

Veterinary Post-Mortem / Cause of Death Certificate — What the Vet Certifies

The government-licensed or registered veterinarian (or the insurer's appointed vet surveyor) examines the deceased dog and issues a Post-Mortem / Cause of Death Certificate certifying: breed, identification (microchip / tattoo number), cause of death (accident — specific type / disease — specific diagnosis / surgical complication). Unlike elephant insurance (where only government vets are accepted), registered private veterinarians are also accepted for dog insurance. The insurer may additionally appoint their own veterinary surveyor to verify the findings.

Common Questions about Dog Insurance

Frequently Asked Questions

the insurer Dog Insurance is a mortality cover for registered, pedigreed dogs — paying out the sum insured (market value of the dog) if the dog dies from accident, disease, or surgical complications. India has 35 million+ pet dogs — one of the fastest-growing pet markets globally. A pedigreed Labrador or German Shepherd is worth ₹15,000–₹80,000; a show-grade champion ₹1,00,000–₹5,00,000+; a trained security dog ₹50,000–₹2,00,000. Individual pet owners, breeders, kennel operators, and security firms all benefit — protecting their financial investment in a valued animal.
Only pedigreed dogs registered with the Kennel Club of India (KCI) or National Kennel Club (NKC) are eligible under this policy. Mongrel / mixed-breed / stray dogs are NOT eligible. The dog must have a valid KCI / NKC Pedigree Certificate.

Eligible breeds include all KCI-registered import breeds: Labrador, German Shepherd, Golden Retriever, Rottweiler, Dobermann, Dachshund, Beagle, Pug, Great Dane, Saint Bernard, Husky, etc.

Indian breeds registered with KCI: Rajapalayam, Mudhol Hound / Caravan Hound, Kombai, Chippiparai, Kanni, Rampur Greyhound, Himalayan Sheepdog, Bully Kutta.
This is a mortality policy ONLY — it is NOT a health insurance policy.

What it covers: The death of the dog from accident, disease, or surgical complication — paying out the sum insured (market value) minus compulsory excess.

What it does NOT cover: Veterinary treatment bills, diagnostic costs, surgery costs, hospitalisation, medication, or any treatment costs incurred while the dog was alive and being treated.

For vet bill coverage, you need a separate Pet Health Insurance policy. Contact Probitas on 022 4302 0000 to explore both mortality and health cover options for your dog.
Any disease certified by a registered veterinarian as cause of death is covered. Key named diseases include:
Canine Distemper — one of the most common fatal diseases in India
Canine Parvovirus (CPV) — highly contagious; rapidly fatal in puppies
Infectious Canine Hepatitis (ICH)
Leptospirosis, Canine Coronavirus (CCV)
Rabies — invariably fatal once symptomatic
GDV / Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus (Bloat) — fatal emergency in large breeds
Cancer / Neoplasia — malignant tumours
Kidney failure (CKD), Liver failure, DCM

Important: Vaccination-preventable diseases (Distemper, Parvovirus, Rabies) — if vaccination has lapsed, the claim may be void.
The sum insured is the agreed market value of the dog at inception — assessed and certified by a government-licensed / registered veterinarian. Factors determining value:
Breed — pedigree and breed standard quality
KCI championship wins / show titles — championship dogs command premium
Age — younger dogs (2–5 years) generally command highest value; value declines after 6–8 years
Training level — security / working dogs: training value added
Health condition at inception
Breeding potential — stud dogs / brood bitches
Yes — proof of current vaccination is mandatory at inception. The dog must be vaccinated against Distemper (D), Parvovirus (P), Hepatitis (H), Leptospirosis (L), Parainfluenza (Pi), and Rabies (R) as per the recommended schedule (usually annual boosters).

Critical risk: If the dog's vaccination against Distemper, Parvovirus, or Rabies has lapsed at the time of death from that specific disease, the claim for that vaccine-preventable disease may be voided.

Always maintain annual vaccination boosters throughout the policy period and submit updated vaccination records at each renewal.
Step 1: Call Probitas on 022 4302 0000 within 24 HOURS of the dog's death.
Step 2: Do NOT cremate, bury, or dispose of the dog before veterinary examination.
Step 3: Photograph the deceased dog.
Step 4: For road accidents: lodge a Police FIR at the nearest police station immediately.
Step 5: Contact a registered veterinarian to examine the dog and issue a Post-Mortem / Cause of Death Certificate.
Step 6: Get the microchip scanned to confirm identity before vet examination.

Most common mistake: Cremating the dog before the vet examines it — this immediately voids the claim.
Yes — security / working dogs are covered at higher sum insured than standard pet dogs. A trained security dog may be worth ₹50,000–₹2,00,000 — the market value includes not just the dog's breed value but also the training value (obedience, security, detection training).

For working / security dogs, the following additional documentation is required at inception:
Training certification from the training institute / security firm
• KCI / NKC pedigree certificate
• Government-licensed vet value assessment (covering both dog value and training value)

Police / military dogs may have additional documentation requirements. Contact Probitas on 022 4302 0000.
No — theft or disappearance of the dog is NOT covered under this policy. This policy covers death only — the dog must have died (from accident, disease, or surgical complication) and the death must be certified by a registered veterinarian with a Post-Mortem / Cause of Death Certificate.

If the dog has been stolen or has gone missing without proof of death, no claim arises under this policy. There is no current standard product in India's rural insurance range that covers dog theft specifically. Contact Probitas on 022 4302 0000 for any available options.
Call our experts on 022 4302 0000 (Mon–Sat, 9 AM–6 PM) or fill in the quote form on this page.
