India's Only Insurance Product Covering an Animal Before Birth

This is the only insurance product in India's rural range that insures an animal that has not yet been born. The insurable subject — the foetus — exists only inside the dam's womb. The policy covers the farmer's investment in premium genetics, AI breeding, and high-value livestock from as early as 5 months before the calf is born. A high-quality HF crossbred heifer calf is worth ₹25,000–₹80,000; a Murrah buffalo heifer calf ₹25,000–₹1,00,000; an ET calf from an exotic donor ₹50,000–₹2,00,000+. The policy runs from confirmed 5-month gestation to delivery and automatically terminates on live birth of the calf.

Who Can Apply

Eligibility & Sum Insured

🚫
MINIMUM 5 MONTHS' GESTATION — MANDATORY. NO EXCEPTIONS.

The Foetus Insurance policy can only be issued after the pregnancy is confirmed at a MINIMUM of 5 months' gestation by a government / registered veterinarian's Pregnancy Diagnosis (PD) certificate. Policies issued before 5 months' confirmed gestation are VOID. Early embryonic death (before 5 months) is not an insurable event under this policy. No exceptions — early application will result in policy void.

🩺

Pregnancy Diagnosis (PD) Certificate — Mandatory at Inception

A Pregnancy Diagnosis (PD) certificate from a government / registered veterinarian — confirming minimum 5 months' gestation by rectal palpation, ultrasound, or progesterone test, and the dam's current health status — is mandatory at inception. Without PD certificate, no Foetus Insurance policy can be issued.

📋

Dam Must Be Separately Insured Under Cattle Insurance — Companion Policy

The dam (pregnant cow or buffalo) must hold a valid the insurer Cattle Insurance policy. Foetus Insurance is a companion policy to Cattle Insurance — both must be active simultaneously. If the Cattle Insurance lapses, the Foetus policy may also be voided. The dam's Cattle Insurance policy number must be provided at inception.

🐄 Who is Eligible?

  • Owner of a pregnant cow or buffalo — gestation confirmed minimum 5 months by PD certificate
  • Individual farmers, dairy cooperatives, SHGs, FPOs, dairy companies
  • The dam must also be insured under a current the insurer Cattle Insurance policy
  • Breeds (Cows): HF, Jersey, Sahiwal, Gir, Tharparkar, Ongole, Hariana, Red Sindhi, crossbreds
  • Breeds (Buffaloes): Murrah, Surti, Mehsana, Jaffarabadi, Nili-Ravi, Bhadawari
  • Dam must be in good health — veterinary health certificate required
  • ET pregnancies: ET certificate from NDDB / SAF / private ET lab required

⏱️ Policy Period — From PD Date to Delivery

The policy covers the foetus from the date of confirmed PD (minimum 5 months' gestation) to the date of delivery (birth). Maximum policy period:

  • Cattle (cows): approximately 4 months (from 5 months' gestation to term at ~9 months)
  • Buffaloes: approximately 5–5.5 months (from 5 months' to term at ~10.5 months)

The policy automatically terminates on live birth of the calf. The born calf must then be separately insured under a Calf / Cattle Insurance policy.

Coverage Under Foetus Insurance

What is Covered — Four Cause Categories

Foetus Insurance covers four categories of foetal loss: infectious abortion, trauma/non-infectious abortion, stillbirth, and death of dam during pregnancy. All claims require government veterinary certification and 24-hour notification.

🚨

NOTIFY WITHIN 24 HOURS — Abortion, Stillbirth, or Dam Death

Any abortion, stillbirth, or death of the dam during pregnancy must be notified to Probitas on 022 4302 0000 within 24 HOURS of occurrence. Do NOT dispose of the aborted foetus, stillborn calf, or placenta before the government veterinarian examines them. Delayed notification prejudices the claim. For disease-related abortion (Brucellosis / IBR): the treating veterinarian must also be informed immediately.

⚠️

Do NOT Dispose of Foetal Remains Before Veterinary Examination

The aborted foetus / stillborn calf and placenta must NOT be disposed of, buried, or removed before the government / registered veterinarian examines and certifies the cause of foetal loss. Premature disposal of foetal remains before veterinary examination voids the claim. Always photograph the remains and call Probitas on 022 4302 0000 first.

🦠

Brucellosis — Notifiable Disease: State Animal Husbandry Dept. Must Be Informed

Brucellosis (Brucella abortus) is a notifiable disease under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act and the Livestock Importation Act. If Brucellosis is suspected or diagnosed as the cause of abortion, the state Animal Husbandry Department must be notified. Blood testing (serology) of the dam and herd mates for Brucella antibodies may be required. Government disease control measures — quarantine, vaccination, culling — must be complied with.

🦠

Infectious Abortion

  • Brucellosis (Brucella abortus) — #1 infectious cause in India; notifiable disease
  • IBR (Infectious Bovine Rhinotracheitis)
  • BVD (Bovine Viral Diarrhoea)
  • Leptospirosis, Trichomonosis, Fungal / mycotic abortion
💥

Trauma / Non-Infectious Abortion

  • Accidental trauma / physical injury to the dam causing abortion
  • Nutritional deficiency (Vit A, E, Selenium, Iodine) in the dam
  • Toxic plants / ingested toxins causing foetal loss
  • Extreme heat stress / heat wave causing abortion
  • Hormonal imbalance / progesterone deficiency
👶

Stillbirth / Dystocia

  • Dystocia (difficult birth) leading to stillbirth / foetal asphyxia
  • Premature placental separation during delivery
  • Umbilical cord complications
  • Uterine torsion during late pregnancy
  • Emergency C-section foetal loss
🐄

Death of Dam During Pregnancy

  • If the dam dies from any insured cause and the foetus cannot be delivered alive
  • Foetal loss covered under this policy (in addition to dam claim under Cattle Insurance)
  • Govt. vet certifies cause of dam death and foetal non-viability
⚠️ Disclaimer: Coverage details are for general informational purposes only. Refer to the policy wordings issued through Probitas Insurance Brokers Ltd. for complete terms. Probitas Insurance Brokers Pvt. Ltd. (Lic. No. 528) is an IRDAI-licensed broker and does not underwrite insurance.

How Claims Are Calculated

Indemnity & Claim Calculation

🐄 Foetal Loss Claim Formula

Abortion / Stillbirth Claim = Sum Insured (agreed calf value) − Compulsory Excess

Dam Death Foetal Loss = Sum Insured − Compulsory Excess (separate from the dam's own claim under Cattle Insurance — two separate claims from two separate policies)

Sum Insured = anticipated market value of the calf at birth / weaning — agreed at inception and certified by a government / licensed veterinarian.

📋 SI is Fixed at Inception — Breed & Breeding Method Determine Value

  • Natural mating: indigenous / desi breed — lower SI (₹5K–₹15K)
  • AI pregnancy: crossbred / HF / Jersey — higher SI (₹15K–₹80K)
  • ET pregnancy: exotic donor genetics — highest SI (₹50K–₹2L+)

The agreed SI at inception is the maximum claim payable — regardless of actual market price fluctuations at time of foetal loss.

Policy Terminates on Live Birth of the Calf: The Foetus Insurance policy automatically terminates upon the live birth of a healthy calf. No claim arises on live birth — the policy has fulfilled its purpose. The born calf must then be separately insured under a Calf / Cattle Insurance policy. Contact Probitas on 022 4302 0000 immediately after delivery to arrange calf cover.

⚠️

Twin Pregnancy — Must Be Disclosed at Inception: Twin pregnancies in cattle carry higher risk (twin pregnancies account for a disproportionate share of abortion and stillbirth cases). Each foetus in a twin pregnancy requires a separate policy / endorsement. Twin pregnancy must be disclosed at inception — confirmed by veterinary ultrasound. Non-disclosure may void claims.

⚠️ Milk Income Loss NOT Covered

After an abortion, the dam loses the current lactation cycle — typically 10+ months of milk income. This consequential income loss is NOT covered under this policy. Only the capital value of the foetus (sum insured) is payable. For insurance against milk income loss, consider contacting Probitas for allied livestock income protection options.

Policy Conditions

Special Conditions

The following 12 conditions are binding under the insurer Foetus Insurance. Condition 1 (5-month gestation), Condition 3 (Dam insured under Cattle Policy), Condition 5 (24-hour notification), and Condition 6 (Do NOT dispose of foetal remains) are the most critical.

1

Minimum Gestation of 5 Months — Mandatory: Pregnancy must be confirmed at a minimum of 5 months' gestation by a government / registered veterinarian's PD certificate at inception. Policies issued before 5 months' confirmed gestation are VOID. No exceptions.

2

Pregnancy Diagnosis (PD) Certificate at Inception: PD certificate from a government / registered veterinarian confirming minimum 5 months' gestation and dam's health condition is mandatory at inception. Without PD certificate, no policy can be issued.

3

Dam Must Be Separately Insured Under Cattle Insurance: The dam must hold a valid the insurer Cattle Insurance policy. Foetus Insurance is a companion policy — both must be active. Dam's Cattle Insurance policy number must be provided at inception. If Cattle Insurance lapses, Foetus policy may be voided.

4

Veterinary Certification of Foetal Loss: All foetal loss claims must be certified by a government / registered veterinarian who examines the dam and foetal remains and certifies cause. Without veterinary certification, claims will not be settled.

5

Notification Within 24 HOURS of Foetal Loss: Abortion, stillbirth, or dam death during pregnancy must be notified to Probitas (022 4302 0000) within 24 HOURS. Delayed notification prejudices the claim. Treating vet must also be informed immediately for disease-related abortion.

6

Do NOT Dispose of Foetal Remains Before Vet Examination: Aborted foetus / stillborn calf and placenta must NOT be disposed of, buried, or removed before the government / registered veterinarian examines and certifies cause. Premature disposal voids the claim.

7

Brucellosis Testing of Dam: For Brucellosis-suspected or certified claims, the state Animal Husbandry Dept. may require blood testing (serology) of the dam and herd mates. Results affect claim processing and may result in government disease-control measures (quarantine, vaccination).

8

ET (Embryo Transfer) Documentation: For ET pregnancies, the ET certificate from NDDB / SAF / private ET lab confirming donor breed, embryo grade, and transfer date must be submitted at inception. This determines the higher SI applicable to ET foetuses.

9

Policy Period — From PD Date to Delivery: Policy covers the foetus from confirmed PD date (min 5 months) to delivery. Maximum approx 4 months for cattle; 5–5.5 months for buffaloes. Policy automatically terminates on live birth of the calf.

10

Single Foetus Per Policy: Each foetus is insured under a separate policy. For twin pregnancies — each foetus may require a separate policy / endorsement. Twin pregnancies must be disclosed at inception — confirmed by veterinary ultrasound.

11

Cancelled Upon Live Birth: Foetus Insurance automatically terminates on live birth of the calf. No further cover on live birth — the born calf must be separately insured under a Calf / Cattle Insurance policy immediately after delivery.

12

Government Disease Control Compliance: For Brucellosis or other notifiable disease claims, the insured must comply with all state / central Animal Husbandry Dept. measures — quarantine, culling orders, vaccination, and reporting requirements.

How to File a Claim

Foetus Insurance Claim Process

Foetal loss claims require government veterinary examination and certification of cause before disposal of foetal remains. 24-hour notification is critical. Call Probitas on 022 4302 0000 immediately.

🩺

Veterinary Certificate of Foetal Loss — What the Government Vet Certifies

The government / registered veterinarian examines the dam, the foetal remains / aborted foetus / stillborn calf, and the placenta — and issues a Veterinary Certificate of Foetal Loss certifying: cause (abortion / stillbirth / disease — with specific diagnosis / trauma / dam death), gestational age at foetal loss, dam's health status, and whether Brucellosis serology is indicated. For ET pregnancies, the ET centre records are cross-verified. The insurer may additionally appoint their own veterinary surveyor to verify findings.

📢

Notify Within 24 Hours

Call Probitas on 022 4302 0000 within 24 hours of abortion, stillbirth, or dam death during pregnancy. Do NOT dispose of foetal remains, placenta, or stillborn calf. Photograph everything. Notify the treating government veterinarian immediately for disease-related abortions.

🩺

Veterinary Examination & Certification

Government / registered vet examines the dam, foetal remains, and placenta — certifying cause of foetal loss. For Brucellosis: blood serology of dam and herd. For ET: ET centre records verified. Insurer may appoint their own vet surveyor to attend and verify the examination findings.

📋

Submit Claim Documents

Submit: Claim Form, Policy doc, PD Certificate (from inception), Govt. vet Certificate of Foetal Loss, Dam's Cattle Insurance policy number + certificate, photographs of dam and foetal remains (before disposal), ET Certificate (if ET pregnancy), Brucellosis serology report (if applicable), bank details for NEFT.

Claim Settlement

Abortion / Stillbirth: SI (agreed calf value) − Compulsory Excess. Dam death foetal loss: SI − Excess (separate from dam's Cattle Insurance claim). Payment by NEFT within 30 days of complete document submission per IRDAI TAT norms.

Common Questions about Foetus Insurance

Frequently Asked Questions

Foetus (Unborn Calf) Insurance is India's only insurance product covering an animal before it is born. It protects farmers against the financial loss of the unborn calf from abortion (Brucellosis, IBR, BVD, trauma), stillbirth (dystocia), and death of the dam during pregnancy. A high-quality HF crossbred heifer calf is worth ₹25,000–₹80,000; a Murrah buffalo heifer calf ₹25,000–₹1,00,000; an ET calf ₹50,000–₹2,00,000+. Abortion and stillbirth rates in Indian cattle can be 5%–15% — a high-value pregnant cow that aborts loses not just the calf value but also 10+ months of milk income. This policy protects the capital investment in premium genetics from 5 months before the calf is born.
You can buy Foetus Insurance only after the pregnancy is confirmed at a minimum of 5 months' gestation by a government / registered veterinarian's Pregnancy Diagnosis (PD) certificate. This is a hard requirement — the policy is void if issued before 5 months' confirmed gestation.

The policy then runs from the PD date to delivery:
• Cattle (cows): approximately 4 months of cover (from 5 months' gestation to term at ~9 months)
• Buffaloes: approximately 5–5.5 months of cover (from 5 months to term at ~10.5 months)

You cannot buy it too late either — the policy must be active when the foetal loss event occurs.
Yes — Brucellosis (Brucella abortus) is the most important named covered cause under this policy. Brucellosis is the single most common cause of infectious abortion in Indian cattle and buffaloes. The abortion must be certified by a government veterinarian's post-mortem / serology confirming Brucella as the cause.

Important: Brucellosis is a notifiable disease — the state Animal Husbandry Department must be informed. Blood testing of the dam and herd mates may be required. Government disease-control measures (quarantine, vaccination, potentially culling) must be complied with. Pre-existing Brucellosis infection known to the owner at policy inception is excluded (pre-existing condition exclusion).
Yes — stillbirth is covered under this policy where the cause is:
• Dystocia (difficult birth / prolonged labour) leading to foetal asphyxia
• Premature placental separation
• Umbilical cord complications causing foetal death
• Uterine torsion during late pregnancy
• Disease of the dam during late gestation causing foetal death in utero
• Emergency C-section where the foetus does not survive

Stillbirth caused solely by the owner's mishandling during delivery is excluded — the parturition process itself is the farmer's responsibility. For disputed cases, the government vet's cause certification is binding.

Notification must be within 24 hours. Stillborn calf and placenta must NOT be disposed of before vet examination.
Yes — this is a mandatory condition. The dam (pregnant cow or buffalo) must hold a valid the insurer Cattle Insurance policy at the time of inception of the Foetus Insurance policy. Foetus Insurance is a companion policy to Cattle Insurance — both must be active simultaneously.

This matters because: If the dam dies during pregnancy, TWO separate claims arise — one from the Cattle Insurance policy (for the dam's death), and one from the Foetus Insurance policy (for the foetal loss). Both claims are paid from their respective policies.

If the dam's Cattle Insurance lapses during the pregnancy, the Foetus policy may also be voided. Always keep both policies active throughout the pregnancy.
The sum insured is the anticipated market value of the calf at birth / weaning — agreed at inception and certified by a government / licensed veterinarian:

• Indigenous / Desi breed: ₹5,000–₹15,000
• Crossbred (HF×Sahiwal / Jersey×Sahiwal): ₹15,000–₹50,000
• Pure HF / Jersey calf: ₹25,000–₹80,000
• Murrah buffalo calf (heifer): ₹25,000–₹1,00,000
• ET (Embryo Transfer) calf: ₹50,000–₹2,00,000+

The breeding method (natural, AI, ET) and breed of sire and dam determine the value. The SI is fixed at inception and is the maximum payable — actual market price at time of foetal loss is not used.
Yes — ET pregnancies carry the highest sum insured (₹50,000–₹2,00,000+) under this policy. Embryo Transfer involves transferring an embryo from a high-genetic-value donor cow into a surrogate (recipient) dam — the resulting calf carries premium exotic genetics from the donor.

For ET pregnancies, the following additional documentation is required at inception:
ET Certificate from the ET centre (NDDB / SAF / private ET laboratory) confirming donor breed, embryo grade, transfer date, and surrogate dam identity
• This certificate is the basis for the higher SI assessment

The surrogate (recipient) dam still needs to be separately insured under a Cattle Insurance policy. Contact Probitas on 022 4302 0000 to discuss ET-specific SI assessment and documentation requirements.
Step 1: Call Probitas on 022 4302 0000 immediately — within 24 hours of the abortion or stillbirth.
Step 2: Do NOT dispose of the aborted foetus, stillborn calf, or placenta — the vet must examine them.
Step 3: Photograph the dam and foetal remains before any intervention.
Step 4: Contact your government / registered veterinarian immediately to examine the dam and foetal remains and certify the cause.
Step 5: If Brucellosis is suspected: notify the state Animal Husbandry Department.
Step 6: Note the date, time, and circumstances of the event.

Most common mistake: Disposing of the aborted foetus or placenta before the vet examines it — this immediately voids the claim.
No — loss of milk income / milk production from the dam after abortion is NOT covered. This policy covers only the capital value of the foetus (sum insured = anticipated calf market value). After an abortion, the dam loses the current lactation cycle — typically 10+ months of milk income — but this consequential loss is excluded.

Claim = Sum Insured (calf value) − Compulsory Excess. The policy does not replace milk income, future lactation revenue, or the cost of rebbreeding the dam. For income protection insurance options, contact Probitas on 022 4302 0000 to explore available allied livestock income protection products.
Call our rural insurance experts on 022 4302 0000 (Mon–Sat, 9 AM–6 PM) or fill in the quote form on this page. Before calling, have ready: confirmed gestation age, animal breed and type, pregnancy type (natural / AI / ET), proposed sum insured (based on calf market value in your region), and the dam's Cattle Insurance policy number.

For ET pregnancies: have the ET certificate from NDDB / SAF / private ET lab.

We will help you: verify PD certificate validity, determine correct SI for the calf breed / pregnancy type, confirm dam's Cattle Insurance is active (mandatory), and issue the Foetus Insurance policy from Probitas Insurance Brokers Ltd. as your IRDAI-licensed broker (Lic. No. 528).
