🐎 Horse Insurance — Deep Dive

India has ~340,000 horses (20th Livestock Census 2019). From a ₹5 crore+ RWITC thoroughbred to a ₹50,000 agricultural horse — the SI range within horses alone spans 1,000x. Colic kills high-value horses within hours. Glanders forces mandatory euthanasia. NRCE Hisar is India's national equine research authority.

GLANDERS — NOTIFIABLE DISEASE· Mandatory Euthanasia Law

NRCE Hisar is the National Authority· Similar to ASF in Pigs
  • Glanders (Burkholderia mallei) is a NOTIFIABLE DISEASE endemic in UP, Bihar, and Delhi. NRCE Hisar (National Research Centre on Equines) is the national diagnostic authority.
  • Glanders-positive horses MUST be euthanised by law under the Prevention and Control of Infectious and Contagious Diseases in Animals Act.
  • Government-ordered euthanised Glanders horses may be excluded from insurance claims — similar to ASF culling in pigs and AI culling in poultry.
  • Natural Glanders deaths BEFORE a government euthanasia order: COVERED under this policy (after NRCE/AH Dept. confirmation and vet certification).
🐴

Colic — Most Common Sudden Fatal Disease of Horses· Primary Insurance Need

Colic (intestinal torsion / obstruction / impaction) is the most common cause of sudden horse death in India. A ₹30 lakh Mumbai racehorse or a ₹15 lakh Marwari show horse can die from colic within hours. Emergency colic surgery costs ₹1–₹5 lakh — and the horse may still not survive. Colic deaths certified by a registered vet are fully covered under this policy. This is the primary insurance need for high-value horses.

🏇

Racing Thoroughbred — Special Endorsement | RWITC / BRTC / MRC / KRSAA Registration

For registered racehorses (RWITC Mumbai/Pune, BRTC Bengaluru, MRC Chennai, KRSAA Mysore, RCTC Kolkata), race authority vet certification is required. Fatal racing injuries (fractures from falls), exercise-induced fatal events (EIPH), and humane euthanasia due to unrecoverable racing fractures may be covered with a special endorsement. The Jockey Club / racing authority registration number is accepted as the horse's identification in addition to ear tag / brand.

India's Donkey Population Has COLLAPSED by 61% — The Steepest Livestock Decline in History

India's donkey population fell from 3.2 million (2012) to 1.2 million (2019) — a 61% decline in just 7 years — the steepest livestock population collapse in Indian census history. Working donkeys support the livelihoods of India's most vulnerable communities — construction site workers, salt pan labourers, brick kiln workers, and rural agricultural households. Donkey Insurance provides critical financial security for these communities: losing a working donkey at a construction site means losing the family's primary income source.

🪖

Indian Army Mountain Artillery Mules — Insured with Ministry of Defence Endorsement

Indian Army mountain artillery and supply regiments use mules for operations in terrain impassable for vehicles — Siachen glacier, Kargil sector, Arunachal Pradesh front, and Rohtang supply routes. Mules carry artillery shells, ammunition, and equipment in extreme high-altitude conditions. Army mules may be insured with Ministry of Defence endorsement. SI reflects training value in addition to market value: ₹50,000–₹2,00,000.

These perils must be declared at inception. Revenue Dept. / Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) avalanche / snow disaster certificate required for claims. This is the only rural insurance product in the series where altitude-specific weather events are named covered perils.

🔬

NRC on Yak (NRCY), Dirang, Arunachal Pradesh — India's Premier Yak Research Institution

NRC on Yak (NRCY), Dirang, Arunachal Pradesh is the only institution in the world dedicated exclusively to yak research — under ICAR. NRCY provides breed conservation, disease management, and yak health certification. For high-value yak disease claims and disease diagnosis, NRCY-supported certification may be required. Parallel to NRCC (camel) and NRCE (equines) in the rural insurance ecosystem.

🏕️

Changpa & Brokpa Communities — RPBY 70% Subsidy for Nomadic Yak Herders

Changpa pastoral community (Changthang plateau, Ladakh — living at 4,200m–5,500m; also herd Pashmina goats) and Brokpa community (Arunachal Pradesh) are India's primary yak herding communities. Yak herding is under existential threat from climate change (melting high-altitude pastures) and community migration. These nomadic pastoral communities qualify for RPBY 70% premium subsidy. Yak insurance is critical for their livelihood security.

🦬 Yak SI Range Table

Coverage — All 4 Species

What is Covered Across All Species

All four species are covered against disease, accident, and natural calamity. Yak and hill pony policies additionally cover avalanche / blizzard — the only altitude-specific covered peril in India's rural insurance range. 24-hour notification is critical for all species.

🚨

Notify Within 24 HOURS for All Species — Do NOT Dispose of Carcass Before Vet Examination

Death of any insured horse / pony / donkey / mule / yak must be notified to Probitas on 022 4302 0000 within 24 HOURS. How Claims Are Calculated

Indemnity & Claim Calculation

Claim Formula — All Species

Claim = Sum Insured (agreed market value at inception) − Compulsory Excess

Each insured animal is claimed individually by its ear tag / brand number (or racing authority registration number for registered racehorses). SI = market value certified by a govt.-licensed vet at inception.

🏇 Racing Thoroughbred — Highest SI in Rural Insurance

A racing thoroughbred can be worth ₹5,00,00,000+ (₹5 crore+) — the highest per-animal SI in India's entire rural insurance product range. Value is determined by race record, breeding lineage (stud fees of dam/sire), age (racing peak: 3–6 years), and physical conformation as assessed by a racecourse veterinarian. RWITC / racing authority registration number + racecourse vet certificate required.

🏷️

Ear Tag / Brand / Jockey Club Registration — Identification for All Species

Every insured animal must be identified by ear tag or brand number (all species) or Jockey Club / racing authority registration number (registered racehorses). The identification must be visible in claim photographs. For Manipuri ponies: Manipur State Livestock Development Board certificate number also required. For Army mules: MoD brand / identification number.

⚠️ No Consequential Loss — Death Cover Only

This policy pays the SI on death — it does NOT cover: race prize money, agricultural income, milk revenue (yak/dairy), wool / khullu income, stud fees, tourism fees, transport income, or any income after the animal's death. Only the agreed SI (minus excess) is payable.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions — All 4 Species

Yes — the insurer's Horse / Pony / Donkey / Yak Insurance is a single multi-species product covering all four species under one framework. Each species has its own SI range, risk profile, and special conditions but the same the insurer policy structure applies. You can insure a racing thoroughbred (₹5 crore+) and a working donkey (₹12,000) under the same policy framework.

The four species and their primary geographic contexts:
Horse: Racing (Mumbai/Bengaluru/Chennai), Show (Rajasthan/Gujarat), Agricultural (across India)
Pony: Himalayan hill ponies (Spiti, Ladakh, Sikkim), Amarnath Yatra ponies, Manipuri polo pony
Donkey/Mule: Construction sites (UP/Bihar), brick kilns, salt pans, Army mountain operations
Yak: Himalayan high-altitude zones — Arunachal (Brokpa), Himachal (Spiti), Ladakh (Changpa), Sikkim
Yes — registered racehorses are insurable under this product. Racing thoroughbreds can be worth ₹5,00,00,000+ (₹5 crore+) — the highest per-animal SI in India's rural insurance range.

Requirements for racehorse insurance:
• Registration with RWITC (Mumbai/Pune), BRTC (Bengaluru), MRC (Chennai), KRSAA (Mysore), or RCTC (Kolkata)
• Jockey Club / racing authority registration number serves as identification
• Racecourse vet health certificate and SI assessment
Special endorsement required for racing injury coverage (fatal fractures from falls, exercise-induced events, humane euthanasia for unrecoverable racing fractures)
• Race authority vet certification required for racing injury claims

Standard disease and accident coverage (colic, stable fire, etc.) is available without special endorsement.
This has a nuanced answer — similar to ASF in pigs:

Natural Glanders deaths ARE covered: Horses that die naturally from Glanders before a government euthanasia order are covered (after NRCE Hisar confirmation and vet certification).

Government-ordered euthanised horses may be excluded: Horses ordered euthanised under law (Prevention and Control of Infectious and Contagious Diseases in Animals Act) may be excluded from insurance claims.

NRCE Hisar (National Research Centre on Equines) in Hisar, Haryana, is the national authority for Glanders diagnosis in India. Glanders is endemic in UP, Bihar, and Delhi. Any suspected Glanders case must be reported to NRCE Hisar and the state AH Dept. immediately.

Call Probitas on 022 4302 0000 immediately on any Glanders death or suspicion — before any disposal.
Yes — avalanche, blizzard, and dzud are SPECIFIC COVERED PERILS for yaks insured in high-altitude Himalayan zones above 3,500m — the only product in India's rural insurance range with altitude-specific weather perils.

Dzud is extreme snowfall causing pasture loss and yak starvation — a disaster specific to high-altitude Himalayan pastoral zones (originally a Mongolian term, now used in the Indian Himalayan context).

Conditions:
• The altitude zone and the avalanche / blizzard peril must be declared at inception
• Revenue Dept. / Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) avalanche / snow disaster certificate required for claims
• Applicable zones: Spiti valley, Lahaul, Zanskar, Changthang (Ladakh), Arunachal Himalayan pastures
• Ear tags of buried / deceased yaks must be verified against the policy schedule
The Manipuri pony is the indigenous horse breed of Manipur — and the original polo pony. Polo as a sport was played on Manipuri ponies centuries before the British formalized it, and the Manipuri pony is the breed from which the game of polo originated in India.

The Manipuri pony is a state-protected breed under the Manipur government — it cannot be exported without government permission.

A special valuation certificate from the Manipur State Livestock Development Board (MSLDB) is required for Manipuri pony insurance — because the state's breed protection law directly creates an insurance documentation requirement. No other rural insurance product in the series has a state government's breed protection law creating an insurance documentation requirement.

SI for Manipuri polo ponies: ₹50,000–₹2,00,000.
Yes — India's donkey population has undergone a catastrophic 61% decline from 3.2 million (2012) to 1.2 million (2019) — the steepest livestock population collapse in Indian census history in a single census cycle.

The decline is driven by mechanisation (small vehicles replacing donkeys at construction sites), social discrimination against donkey ownership, and reduced market availability.

Donkey insurance matters because working donkeys support some of India's most economically vulnerable communities:
Construction site workers (UP, Bihar, Rajasthan, Gujarat, AP, Karnataka) — donkeys carry bricks, sand, and cement
Brick kiln workers — donkeys are the primary transport at brick kilns across India
Salt pan workers (Rajasthan, Gujarat, AP)
• Rural agricultural transport households

Losing a working donkey at a construction site means losing the family's primary income source.
Yes — Indian Army mules may be insured with Ministry of Defence endorsement.

Indian Army mountain artillery units and supply regiments use mules for operations in terrain impassable for vehicles — Siachen glacier, Kargil sector, Arunachal Pradesh front, Rohtang supply routes, and other Himalayan front areas. Mules carry artillery shells, ammunition, rations, and equipment in extreme high-altitude conditions where even helicopters cannot always operate.

For Army mule insurance:
• Ministry of Defence (MoD) endorsement required
• SI reflects training value in addition to market value: ₹50,000–₹2,00,000 for trained mountain artillery mules
• MoD identification brand / number serves as the animal's identification
• Coverage applies as per the standard policy perils (disease, accident, natural calamity)
Step 1: Call Probitas on 022 4302 0000 within 24 HOURS.
Step 2: Do NOT dispose of the carcass before vet examination.
Step 3: Photograph the animal clearly — ear tag / brand / racing registration number must be visible.
Step 4 — Species-specific:
Horse — Glanders: Also notify NRCE Hisar and state AH Dept.
Horse — Road accident: Lodge Police FIR immediately.
Yak — Avalanche: Notify Revenue Dept. / SDM for avalanche certificate.
