What is a Personal Accident Policy?

The the insurer Personal Accident Policy provides financial compensation for bodily injury, disability, or death resulting solely and directly from an accident caused by external, violent, and visible means. It operates worldwide, 24 hours a day — covering accidents at work, on the road, at home, or anywhere in the world.

The Gap PA Fills — Disability Without Death

The most important PA scenario that life insurance cannot cover:

You are in a road accident. You survive — but you lose both your hands. You are permanently, totally disabled. You can never work again.

Life Insurance: Pays nothing (you're alive)
Health Insurance: Pays your hospital bills (₹5–₹10 lakh)
PA Policy (Table A/B/C): Pays 100% of your Capital Sum Insured as a lump sum — ₹25 lakh, ₹50 lakh, ₹1 crore — to replace your lifetime income.

This is why PA is not optional for any earning individual. It is the only insurance product that pays for living with a permanent disability.

📋

What Counts as an "Accident" Under PA Policy

An accident must satisfy all THREE conditions simultaneously:

  • External means:The cause is outside the body — not an internal illness like a heart attack or stroke
  • Violent means:A sudden, forceful impact — the event is abrupt and involves force
  • Visible means:The cause and effect can be seen and identified — there is a traceable link between the event and the injury

Examples that qualify: Road accidents, falls, drowning, burns, industrial accidents, train accidents, animal bites, electrocution
Examples that do NOT qualify: Heart attack, stroke, cancer, diabetes complications — these are internal illness causes, not external accidents

  • Table A (recommended for most):Complete protection — covers death, all forms of permanent disability (total + partial), AND temporary disability weekly payments. The additional premium over Table B is modest for the TTD cover added.
  • Table B:Good comprehensive cover — all permanent disabilities covered including the body-part schedule (PPD). Lacks only TTD weekly payments.
  • Table C:Basic disability + death cover — covers major permanent losses (both eyes, both limbs) but not the more granular finger/toe/hearing PPD schedule.
  • Table D:Death only — suitable ONLY if you already have comprehensive disability coverage elsewhere and want minimal PA purely for accidental death nomination.

Why Personal Accident Insurance is Not a Replacement for Health or Life Insurance

How Personal Accident Cover Fits Into Your Insurance Portfolio

Many people assume they're fully covered with a health policy and a life policy. Personal Accident insurance fills a critical gap that neither of those covers — the financial impact of accidental disability and lost income while you're still alive.

The Bottom Line

Personal Accident insurance does something your health policy and life policy simply cannot — it replaces the income you lose when an accident leaves you temporarily or permanently unable to work, while you're still alive and your family still depends on you. At a premium of just a few hundred rupees a year for significant cover, it's one of the most cost-effective additions to any insurance portfolio.

Standard Permanent Partial Disability (PPD) Scale — Personal Accident Policy

PPD Scale — What Each Disability Pays

If an accident results in loss or permanent loss of use of a specific body part, the policy pays a defined percentage of your Sum Insured. This is a standard scale applied across personal accident policies in India.

🧮 A Simple Rule of Thumb

What PA Does NOT Cover

Exclusions — 12 Things PA Does Not Cover

ℹ️

PA Covers ONLY Accidents — Not Illness, Disease, or Natural Death

PA policy's operative clause is triggered only by bodily injury from external, violent, visible means. Natural death (heart attack, stroke, cancer), death from disease, and disability from chronic conditions are NOT within the scope of PA at all — they don't meet the "accident" definition. These require life insurance and health insurance, not PA.

⚠️

Adventure Sports and Hazardous Activities — Excluded

Injuries arising from racing (all types), mountaineering (except trekking), extreme sports, sky-diving, bungee jumping, hand gliding, river rafting competitions, polo, winter sports, skiing, and similar hazardous recreational activities are excluded. Standard trekking is generally covered; extreme mountaineering at altitude is not.

One Benefit per Accident

Only ONE sub-clause benefit payable per accident event. Once Death, PTD (b), or General PTD (d) is paid — no further claims under those sub-clauses for that insured person.

Intentional Self-Injury

Any injury, disablement, or death that is deliberately self-caused — including suicide and attempted suicide — is completely excluded.

Under Influence of Liquor/Drugs

Any accident occurring while the insured is under the influence of intoxicating liquor or drugs (other than prescribed medication) is excluded.

Aviation — Non-Passenger

Injury while engaging in aviation, ballooning, or travelling in aircraft other than as a fare-paying or non-fare-paying passenger in a duly licensed standard type aircraft. Commercial airline passenger = COVERED. Pilot, sky-diver, glider = excluded.

Venereal Disease and AIDS

Death or disablement directly or indirectly caused by venereal diseases, HIV/AIDS, or related conditions is excluded.

Insanity

Mental disorders or injury arising from insanity or mental illness is not covered under the PA policy operative clause.

Breach of Law (Criminal Intent)

Any injury or death arising from the insured committing a breach of law with criminal intent is excluded from all benefits.

War and Allied Perils

War (declared or undeclared), invasion, civil war, rebellion, revolution, insurrection, mutiny, military operations — all excluded.

Nuclear / Radioactive Perils

Ionising radiation, radioactive contamination, nuclear fuel, nuclear weapons — all excluded from PA coverage.

Pregnancy (Medical Extension)

Under the medical expenses extension: death or disablement from pregnancy, childbirth, miscarriage, or complications thereof — excluded for female policyholders.

Double Benefit After PTD/Death

After a claim under Benefit (a) death or Benefit (d) PTD is admitted, no further PA claims of the same type are payable for that insured person.

TTD Payment Before Assessment

TTD (weekly) payments are not made until the total amount has been ascertained and agreed — no advance weekly payment before final assessment.

How to File a Personal Accident Claim

Claim Process — 6 Steps

🚨

Notify Immediately — Time Limit for Death Claims: Before Cremation / Within 1 Month

Written notice must be given to the insurer IMMEDIATELY after any accident.

For DEATH claims: notice must be given BEFORE internment or cremation, and in any case within ONE CALENDAR MONTH of death. For loss of sight or amputation: within one calendar month of the event.

Late notification can be used to repudiate the claim. Call 022 4302 0000 immediately after any accident that may give rise to a PA claim.

⚠️

You Can Claim Under Only ONE Benefit Sub-Clause per Accident

The policy permits compensation under only ONE of the benefit sub-clauses (a)–(f) for any single accident or period of disablement. Once a claim is admitted and paid under Benefit (a) Death, (b) PTD, or (d) General PTD — no further claims under those same sub-clauses are payable for that insured person. Medical expenses and carriage of dead body are payable additionally where applicable.

📢

Notify the insurer Immediately

Written notice to the insurer immediately after any accident. Death claims: notify before cremation or within 1 month. Loss of sight/amputation: within 1 month. Call Probitas on 022 4302 0000 for claims guidance.

🚔

File FIR (If Applicable)

For road accidents, criminal violence, and deaths — FIR with police + Medico-Legal Case (MLC) number from hospital where first treatment given. Essential for death and serious injury claims.

🏥

Medical Examination

the insurer may appoint a Medical Officer to examine the injured insured. For disability claims: Panel Doctor assesses the disability percentage. Post-mortem report required for death claims (within 14 days of demand). Submit to the insurer examination when requested.

📋

Compile Documents

Claim form + Policy + FIR + MLC + Hospital records + Doctor's certificate + Photographs of injuries. Death: additionally — Death Certificate + Post-Mortem report + Legal heir certificate + Nominee ID. Disability: employer certificate for TTD. Medical expenses: original bills + prescriptions.

🔍

the insurer Assessment

In-house assessor or IRDAI-licensed surveyor reviews the claim. Panel Doctor assesses PPD percentage. For TTD: total amount must be ascertained before weekly payments begin. Disputed quantum: referred to sole arbitrator (or 3-member panel if no agreement within 30 days).

Settlement

Death/PTD/PPD: lump sum to insured or nominee. TTD: weekly payments (up to 100 weeks). Med. expenses: reimbursement after account approval. After death/PTD: insured's name deleted by endorsement (no premium refund). IRDAI TAT: 30 days from complete documents.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

PA Policy covers ACCIDENTAL bodily injury and death — specifically from external, violent, and visible means. It differs fundamentally from both life and health insurance:

vs Life Insurance: Life insurance pays on ANY death (natural or accidental). PA pays only on ACCIDENTAL death — but also pays for DISABILITY (which life insurance never covers). If you are permanently disabled in an accident and can't work, life insurance pays nothing. PA pays 100% CSI.

vs Health Insurance: Health insurance pays hospital bills for illness and accidents. PA pays a LUMP SUM for disability/death — not medical bills. PA's lump sum on disability helps replace your income going forward; health insurance's reimbursement only covers the treatment cost.

The gap PA fills that neither life nor health covers: permanent disability without death. You're alive, your hospital bills are paid — but you cannot work again. Only PA's disability lump sum addresses the long-term financial impact.
The four tables represent increasing levels of coverage — each includes everything in the previous table:

Table D: Accidental death only (100% CSI to nominee). Lowest premium. Choose ONLY if you want minimal death-only cover.

Table C: Table D + PTD (permanent total disability — loss of both eyes, both limbs, or combinations) at 100% CSI + 50% benefit for loss of one eye/limb. No-claim bonus included.

Table B: Table C + PPD (permanent partial disablement per body-part schedule — 1% to 75% CSI for specific finger, toe, hearing losses). No-claim bonus included.

Table A (recommended for most people): Table B + TTD (temporary total disablement — 1% CSI per week, max ₹3,000/week, for up to 100 weeks while temporarily unable to work).

Recommendation: Table A provides the most complete protection. The additional cost over Table B is modest, and TTD coverage for fractures, temporary injuries, and accidents that prevent work for weeks or months is highly valuable for any earning individual.
Permanent Total Disablement (PTD): Total and irrecoverable disability — the insured is completely and permanently disabled from working in ANY occupation whatsoever, or has lost both eyes, both limbs, or specific combinations. Pays 100% of CSI.

Permanent Partial Disablement (PPD): Partial and irrecoverable loss of a specific body part — the disability is permanent but the insured can still perform some work. Pays a percentage of CSI per the specific body-part schedule (1% for a single toe to 75% for total hearing loss in both ears).

Key difference: PTD = completely unable to work; PPD = partially and permanently impaired but not totally disabled.

PPD examples: Loss of index finger (10% CSI), loss of one ear hearing (30% CSI), loss of all toes (20% CSI). The Panel Doctor assesses the disability percentage for cases not specifically listed in the schedule.
Temporary Total Disablement (TTD) — available under Table A only — pays weekly compensation while you are completely and temporarily unable to work due to an accident.

Calculation:
Weekly payment = 1% of Capital Sum Insured (CSI) per week
Maximum per week = ₹3,000 (across all PA policies on the same person)
Maximum duration = 100 weeks per injury
Maximum total = whichever occurs first: 100 weeks × weekly payment OR Capital SI exhausted

Example: CSI ₹25,00,000. 1% = ₹25,000/week. But capped at ₹3,000/week. For 18 weeks of fracture recovery: 18 × ₹3,000 = ₹54,000 total TTD payment.

Important: TTD payments are NOT made until the total amount has been ascertained and agreed between the insured and the company. No advance weekly payment before final assessment. TTD is available under Table A only.
The Cumulative No-Claim Bonus (NCB) increases your Capital Sum Insured by 5% for every claim-free policy year — at no increase in premium.

How it works:
Starting CSI: ₹10,00,000
After 1 claim-free year: ₹10,50,000
After 3 claim-free years: ₹11,50,000
After 5 claim-free years: ₹12,50,000
After 10 claim-free years: ₹15,00,000 (50% maximum — CSI cannot grow beyond 150% of original)

If you make a claim in any year: the cumulative bonus earned may be reset or reduced depending on the type of claim. The NCB applies at renewal.

NCB is available under Tables A, B, and C. It is NOT available under Table D (death only cover). Use the Cumulative Bonus Calculator on this page to see your projected SI growth.
PA premium is directly based on your occupation risk class — the higher the workplace risk, the higher the premium:

Class I (Lowest Premium): White-collar, non-hazardous occupations — lawyers, doctors, teachers, accountants, office executives, bankers, architects, housewives, students
Class II (Medium Premium): Semi-hazardous with supervisory duties — builders, contractors, on-site engineers, car drivers, mechanics, veterinary doctors
Class III (Higher Premium): Manual labour using machinery — taxi/truck drivers, industrial workers, construction workers, electricians, farmers, labourers
Class IV: Highly hazardous — underground miners, explosive factory workers, jockeys, circus personnel — may be declined or charged special rates

You MUST provide your accurate occupation at proposal. Providing an incorrect, lower-risk occupation to reduce premium is a misrepresentation that could invalidate your claim. Always disclose your occupation accurately.
The Medical Expenses Extension is an optional add-on at additional premium that reimburses hospitalisation and medical treatment expenses for an accident where a PA claim is admitted.

Coverage limit: The LESSER of 10% of Capital SI OR 40% of the PA compensation paid. Example: CSI ₹15L, TTD claim ₹54,000 → limit = min(₹1,50,000, ₹21,600) = ₹21,600.

Should you add it?
→ If you already have health insurance: health insurance covers accident hospitalisation; the medical expenses extension is supplementary. Not essential.
→ If you have NO health insurance: the medical expenses extension provides some accident treatment coverage. Add it.
→ For Class III/heavy-risk occupations with high likelihood of significant accident injuries: add it.

The limit is relatively modest (40% of TTD/PPD claim) — it doesn't replace health insurance. Think of it as a complementary benefit for accident-specific medical costs.
The most important PA exclusions to know:

1. Natural death and illness: PA covers ONLY accidental injury by external, violent, visible means. Heart attack, stroke, cancer — all excluded.
2. Self-injury and suicide: Any deliberately self-caused injury or death is excluded.
3. Alcohol and drugs: Accidents while intoxicated are excluded.
4. Adventure sports: Racing, extreme mountaineering, sky-diving, ballooning, winter sports, polo — excluded.
5. Aviation — non-passenger: Pilot, sky-diver excluded; commercial airline passenger is covered.
6. War and nuclear perils: Standard exclusion across all insurance products.
7. Pregnancy: For the medical expenses extension — pregnancy-related medical costs excluded.
8. One benefit per accident: Cannot claim under multiple sub-clauses for the same accident. Once Death/PTD is admitted, no further benefit for that insured person.

Importantly: the exclusion for "adventure sports" means if you participate in such activities even recreationally, any accident during those activities will not be covered.
Both are the insurer personal accident policies but designed for different segments:

Individual PA (IPA):
→ Full comprehensive policy with Tables A/B/C/D
→ Occupation-based risk classification (premium varies by class)
→ SI based on income (up to 10× annual income)
→ All 6 benefits available (including TTD in Table A)
→ Cumulative no-claim bonus 5%/year
→ Family package with 10% discount
→ Medical expenses extension available
→ Annual renewal (lifelong)

Janata PA (JPA):
→ Simple mass-market product designed for unorganised sector
→ Available to ANYONE regardless of occupation — no risk classification
→ Maximum SI: ₹1,00,000 (minimum ₹25,000)
→ Fixed premium: ₹15 per ₹25,000 SI (so max ₹60/year for ₹1L cover)
→ Covers only: Death + PTD + PPD — no TTD
→ Long-term policy: up to 5 years with premium discounts
→ Group discounts available for identified groups
→ Ideal for: rural population, daily wage workers, agricultural workers, unorganised sector

Most urban and semi-urban earners should choose Individual PA. JPA is ideal for basic, affordable coverage in rural/unorganised sector contexts.
Your family receives more than just the Capital Sum Insured on your accidental death:

1. Main death benefit: 100% of Capital Sum Insured — paid to nominee or legal heirs (Benefit a)

2. Carriage of dead body: In addition — the LESSER of 2% of CSI or ₹2,500 — reimburses transportation of the deceased from place of accident to residence (available when death occurs outside the insured's residence)

3. Education fund: In addition — 10% of CSI (subject to max ₹10,000) for dependent children below 23 years of age at the time of the accident. Available for Tables A, B, C — NOT Table D. Paid to the same person entitled to receive the CSI.

Example: CSI ₹25,00,000· Children aged 10 and 15
Total payout = ₹25,00,000 (death benefit) + ₹2,500 (carriage) + ₹10,000 (education fund for 2 children) = ₹25,12,500

Note: No interest is payable on any amounts due under the policy. After payment, the insured person's name is deleted from the policy by endorsement with no refund of premium.
Yes — and this is actually the recommended approach. Personal Accident insurance works alongside your other policies, not instead of them. Unlike health insurance (which reimburses medical costs) and life insurance (which pays on death), Personal Accident insurance specifically covers the financial gap created by accidental disability and lost income while you're still alive. A PA claim does not affect your health or life insurance — all three can pay out independently for the same accident. This makes PA insurance one of the smartest additions to a complete insurance portfolio at just ₹1,500–2,000 per year for meaningful cover.
Working from home in a non-manual, administrative capacity places you in Risk Class I — the lowest and most affordable premium category.

The three risk classes work as follows:
- Risk Class I (0.45‰ annual rate): Office workers, doctors, lawyers, architects, teachers, accountants, administrative roles
- Risk Class II (0.60‰): Manual labour, garage mechanics, machine operators, paid drivers, builders
- Risk Class III (0.90‰): Underground mine workers, high-tension electrical installations, jockeys, circus performers, mountaineers

Yes — claims are admissible as long as the accident occurred during the policy period, even if death or disability is confirmed afterwards, provided the outcome occurs within 12 months of the accident.

The key date is when the accident happened, not when disability is formally confirmed. Document everything from the date of the accident and notify us promptly — even if the full extent of disability takes time to become medically confirmed. Prompt notification is important even when the final outcome isn't yet clear. Call 022 4302 0000 for guidance.
No — your cumulative bonus is not completely forfeited on a claim; it is reduced, not eliminated.

Standard cumulative bonus mechanics: Every claim-free year increases your effective Sum Insured by 5%, up to a maximum of 50% above your original cover. If you make a claim in a given year, the cumulative bonus is reduced by 5% at renewal — so you lose one year's increment, not everything you've accumulated.

Example: Started at ₹20 lakh, built up 30% bonus (₹26 lakh effective cover). After a claim year, this reduces to 25% (₹25 lakh effective cover) — you retain 5 years of accumulated benefit.

Yes, absolutely — your term life insurance and a Personal Accident Policy protect against entirely different risks.

Your ₹1 crore term cover pays only if you die. A Personal Accident Policy protects you when you survive an accident but are left permanently or temporarily unable to earn — which many financial advisors argue is the more financially devastating scenario:

- Lose your arm in an accident: your term insurance pays ₹0 (you're alive). Your PA policy pays you a lump sum based on the PPD table.
- 3 months off work with fractures: your term insurance pays ₹0. Your PA policy pays weekly TTD income.
- Permanent paralysis from an accident: your term insurance pays ₹0. Your PA policy pays 100% Sum Insured.

At ₹1,000–3,000 per year for ₹20–50 lakh cover (Risk Class I), PA insurance is one of the most cost-effective safety nets available. Call 022 4302 0000 to add it today.
