Two rabbit worlds, one the insurer scheme. Meat rabbit farms in Kerala, Bihar, and NE India (New Zealand White, Soviet Chinchilla). Angora wool rabbit farms in Himachal Pradesh (CIRR Garsa certified). RHD disease — sudden death in 24–72 hours — no vaccine in India. Snake bite and predator attack covered. Women's SHGs, tribal communities, NABARD / RKVY / CIRR kit schemes.
Rural Insurance
The the insurer Rabbit Insurance Scheme is a livestock mortality insurance product protecting rabbit farmers against financial loss from rabbit death due to disease, accident, or natural calamity. India's rabbit farming is a cottage industry — serving women's SHGs, tribal communities, Angora wool producers in Himachal Pradesh, and meat rabbit farmers across Kerala, Bihar, WB, and NE India. Probitas Insurance Brokers Pvt. Ltd. (IRDAI Lic. No. 528) is your licensed broker.
New Zealand White, Soviet Chinchilla, Grey Giant, Flemish Giant. Kerala, WB, Bihar, NE India (Manipur, Meghalaya), Maharashtra. Fastest-growing meat animal — market weight in 8–10 weeks.
PRIMARY COMMERCIAL PURPOSEGerman Angora, English Angora, Indian Angora, Kashmir White. Himachal Pradesh — Kullu, Manali, Shimla, Kinnaur. CIRR Garsa certified. Angora wool: ₹2,000–₹5,000/kg — world's finest animal fibre.
CIRR GARSA CERTIFIED — HIGHEST SICentral Institute of Research on Rabbits (CIRR), Garsa, Kullu District, Himachal Pradesh — under ICAR — is India's only dedicated rabbit research institution. CIRR distributes Angora rabbit kits to HP hill farmers with insurance linkage, provides breed verification certificates for Angora rabbit insurance (enabling higher SI of ₹1,500–₹6,000/rabbit), and supports Angora wool procurement. Angora wool: 250–400 g per rabbit per year at ₹2,000–₹5,000/kg — one of the world's finest natural fibres. The CIRR Garsa certificate is the single most important document for Angora rabbit insurance in India.
Rabbit farming is India's smallest-scale livestock insurance — insuring animals worth ₹200–₹500 each. It serves Women's Self-Help Groups (SHGs) under NRLM (rabbit farming as quick-return livelihood — market weight in 8–10 weeks), tribal communities in Manipur, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Mizoram, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, and Odisha (supplementary meat protein), and marginal farmers as supplementary income requiring very low investment. NABARD Integrated Rabbit Development Programme and RKVY support rabbit farming as a supplementary livelihood for the poorest rural communities.
Who Can Apply
Every insured rabbit must be individually identified by a unique ear tag or numbered ring at inception. Rabbits without valid identification at the time of the claim cannot be claimed. For farm group policies: an ear tag register must be submitted at inception with tag number, breed, sex, age, and SI per rabbit.
All insured rabbits must be housed in individual or paired cages / hutches — not free-range or on open ground. Cage housing prevents faecal-oral coccidiosis transmission, reduces predator attack risk, and enables individual rabbit identification by ear tag / ring. Rabbits kept free-range without cage housing are NOT eligible.
Snake bite and predator attack (dog, mongoose, cat, rat) are covered accidental perils — one of the most unique covered risks in India's rural insurance range. Snakes entering ground-level rabbit hutches are documented in rural Bihar, UP, Odisha, and NE India. Hutch Security Condition: The hutch must have proper wire mesh / enclosure preventing predator entry. Claims for attacks in poorly secured hutches may be contested.
Coccidiosis (Eimeria spp.) is the most common rabbit disease in India — killing young kits (4–12 weeks). Regular anti-coccidial treatment (Amprolium / Sulpha drugs in drinking water) is expected as standard husbandry. Deaths where no anti-coccidial programme was maintained may be contested as negligence claims. Submit treatment records at inception.
| Rabbit Type / Breed | SI per Rabbit |
|---|---|
| Meat rabbit — weaned kit (4–8 weeks) | ₹100–₹300 |
| Meat rabbit — adult (3–4 kg) | ₹400–₹800 |
| Breeding doe (adult productive female) | ₹500–₹1,200 |
| Breeding buck (adult stud male) | ₹500–₹1,500 |
| Angora adult (wool producer — HP) | ₹1,500–₹4,000 |
| Angora breeding doe (CIRR certified) | ₹3,000–₹6,000 |
SI = market value certified by a govt.-licensed vet. CIRR Garsa certificate enables highest SI for Angora rabbits. Reassessed at each annual renewal.

Coverage Under Rabbit Insurance
Rabbit Insurance covers disease death, accidental death (including snake bite and predator attack — unique in the series), and natural calamity. RHD has no vaccine — natural deaths covered. 24-hour notification and carcass preservation are mandatory.
Death of any insured rabbit must be notified to Probitas on 022 4302 0000 within 24 HOURS. Do NOT dispose of the carcass before the vet examines and certifies cause of death. For RHD: call Probitas FIRST for expedited inspection guidance before biosecurity disposal. Photograph the rabbit and its ear tag / ring clearly.
The rabbit carcass must NOT be buried, burned, or removed before a govt. / registered vet examines and certifies cause of death. Photograph the rabbit and ear tag / ring clearly. For RHD — which requires rapid safe biosecurity disposal — call Probitas on 022 4302 0000 FIRST for expedited inspection guidance before any disposal action.
Snake bite (snakes entering ground-level hutches) and predator attack (dog, mongoose, cat, rat) are COVERED accidental perils — one of the most unique covered risks in India's rural insurance range. Snakes entering rabbit hutches are documented particularly in Bihar, UP, Odisha, and NE India. Hutch mesh condition: The hutch must have proper wire mesh / enclosure. Claims for attacks in poorly secured hutches without mesh may be contested.
Cage housing prevents faecal-oral transmission of coccidiosis (India's most common rabbit disease), reduces predator attack and snake bite risk, and enables individual rabbit identification by ear tag / ring. Free-range or open-ground rabbits without cage housing are NOT eligible for this insurance. Proper hutch mesh is a security condition for predator/snake bite claims.
For Angora rabbit farms in high-altitude Himachal Pradesh (Kullu, Manali, Shimla, Kinnaur), extreme cold / cold wave is a covered natural calamity. However, standard winter housing / insulation measures must be in place. Deaths from cold wave where the farm had NO winter insulation or heating may be contested by the insurer.
How Claims Are Calculated
Claim = SI per rabbit (agreed at inception) − Compulsory Excess
Each insured rabbit is claimed by its ear tag / ring number. For farm group policies: claim = number of dead rabbits (identified by ear tag) × SI per rabbit − compulsory excess. RHD batch claims: each dead rabbit claimed by ear tag.
A productive CIRR-certified Angora breeding doe produces 5–6 litters per year of 6–8 kits PLUS 250–400g Angora wool per year at ₹2,000–₹5,000/kg. Her death represents compounded losses: loss of future kits (income for years), loss of annual wool shearing income, and replacement cost of a CIRR-certified Angora doe. SI of ₹3,000–₹6,000 reflects this compounded value.
For farm group policies, each dead rabbit is claimed by its unique ear tag / ring number from the register submitted at inception. For RHD mass mortality — photograph each dead rabbit with its ear tag / ring visible BEFORE any biosecurity disposal. Claims for rabbits without matching ear tag records in the register are not payable.
This policy pays SI on death only — NOT consequential losses: Angora wool production income, meat sales income, breeding fees from a dead doe's future litters, or any income after the rabbit's death. Only the agreed SI per rabbit (minus excess) is payable.
| Parameter | RHD Outbreak — Kerala Meat Farm | Snake Bite — HP Angora Farm | Coccidiosis — SHG Farm, Manipur |

| Dead Rabbits / Kits | 25 (ear tags verified) | 2 Angora rabbits (ear rings verified) | 18 kits (ear tags verified) |
| Gross Claim | 25 × ₹600 = ₹15,000 | 2 × ₹3,000 = ₹6,000 | 18 × ₹250 = ₹4,500 |
| Compulsory Excess | ₹ 500 | ₹ 300 | ₹ 250 |
| Claim Payable | ₹ 14,500 | ₹ 5,700 | ₹ 4,250 |
| Special Documents | State AH Dept. RHD confirmation + vet death cert. (25 ear tags); photographed before biosecurity disposal | Vet snake bite cert. + hutch mesh photograph (intact); CIRR Garsa breed cert. | Vet coccidiosis cert. + anti-coccidial treatment records; SHG registration cert. |
| Special Note | Call Probitas FIRST before RHD carcass disposal — biosecurity vs. insurance inspection tension | Hutch mesh must be intact to prevent "unsecured hutch" claim contest | Anti-coccidial records essential — claims without these records may be contested |
* Illustrative only. For RHD: state AH Dept. report + vet certification required; call Probitas before disposal. For snake bite: hutch mesh security documented. For coccidiosis: anti-coccidial records mandatory. Actual settlement depends on vet certification, ear tag verification, and policy excess.
Policy Conditions
The following 12 conditions are binding under the the insurer Rabbit Insurance Scheme. Conditions 1 (Ear Tag), 2 (Cage Housing), 3 (RHD — No Vaccine), and 10 (Coccidiosis Management) are the most critical.
Ear Tag / Numbered Ring Mandatory: Every insured rabbit must be identified by a unique ear tag or ring at inception. Rabbits without valid identification at the time of the claim cannot be claimed. For farm group policies: ear tag register submitted at inception.
Cage / Hutch Housing Mandatory: Insured rabbits must be housed in individual or paired cages / hutches. Free-range or open-ground rabbits without cage housing are NOT eligible. Cage housing is mandatory for coccidiosis prevention and predator / snake bite security.
RHD / RVHD — No Vaccine — Special Condition: RHD causes sudden death in 24–72 hours. NO widely available Indian vaccine (as of 2024). Natural deaths from RHD: COVERED. RHD is notifiable — notify state AH Dept. immediately. Call Probitas FIRST before any carcass disposal for expedited inspection guidance.
Snake Bite / Predator Attack — Hutch Security Required: Snake bite and predator attack (dog, mongoose, cat, rat) are covered — but the hutch must have proper wire mesh / enclosure at the time of the incident. Claims for attacks in poorly secured hutches without mesh may be contested.
Angora Rabbits — CIRR Garsa Certificate: For Angora rabbits in HP, a CIRR (Central Institute of Research on Rabbits), Garsa, Kullu breed verification certificate is preferred for high-value Angora insurance (SI ₹1,500–₹6,000). CIRR-certified stock enables higher SI than uncertified Angora.
Notify Within 24 HOURS: Death must be notified to Probitas (022 4302 0000) within 24 HOURS. Do NOT dispose of carcass before vet examination. For RHD: call Probitas FIRST for expedited inspection before biosecurity disposal. Photograph ear tag / ring clearly.
Farm Group Policy — Death Register: A death register must be maintained noting the date, ear tag number, and suspected cause for each rabbit death. The death register is submitted with the claim. Monthly / quarterly farm vet inspection is recommended.
Minimum Farm Size: Some insurers require a minimum farm size (typically 20–50 rabbits) for a group farm policy. Individual policies (1–5 rabbits) may have limited availability — SHG / group policies are more common and better supported.
Extreme Cold Condition (HP Angora): For Angora farms in high-altitude HP (Kullu, Manali, Shimla, Kinnaur), extreme cold / cold wave is covered — but standard winter housing / insulation measures must be in place. Deaths from cold where farm had NO insulation may be contested.
Coccidiosis Management — Anti-Coccidial Treatment Expected: Regular anti-coccidial treatment (Amprolium / Sulpha drugs in drinking water) is expected as standard husbandry. Deaths from coccidiosis where NO anti-coccidial programme was maintained may be contested as negligence claims. Submit treatment records at inception.
Annual Renewal — Fresh Valuation: At each annual renewal, a fresh vet certificate confirming current health and market value is required. SI is reassessed annually — may increase for growing meat rabbits up to market weight; Angora does reassessed on wool production record.
Cancellation: Either party may cancel on 7 days' written notice. Premium refunded on short-period scale for unexpired term. No refund if a claim has been paid during the policy period.
How to File a Claim
All rabbit death claims require veterinary cause-of-death certification. For RHD: state AH Dept. report required; call Probitas BEFORE disposal. For snake bite: hutch mesh photograph needed. Anti-coccidial records essential for coccidiosis claims. Call 022 4302 0000.
RHD biosecurity requires rapid safe disposal of dead rabbits to prevent spread to surviving farm animals. But insurance requires vet inspection BEFORE disposal. CALL PROBITAS ON 022 4302 0000 IMMEDIATELY on the first RHD death — Probitas will arrange expedited vet inspection so you can dispose safely and still file a valid claim. State AH Dept. RHD investigation report is also required. Photograph every dead rabbit with its ear tag / ring visible before any disposal.
Call Probitas on 022 4302 0000 within 24 HOURS. Do NOT dispose of carcass before vet inspection. Photograph rabbit and ear tag / ring clearly. RHD suspected: also notify state AH Dept. immediately. Snake bite: photograph hutch mesh (intact). Cold wave (HP): Revenue Dept. / local authority certificate.
A govt. / registered vet examines the carcass and issues a Cause of Death Certificate — certifying breed, ear tag / ring number, and cause (RHD / coccidiosis / snake bite / accident / calamity). For RHD / disease outbreaks: state AH Dept. investigation report also required. For Angora rabbits: CIRR Garsa can provide disease support.
Claim Form, Policy schedule, Ear tag / ring numbers of deceased rabbits, Vet Health Certificate (inception), Vet Cause of Death Certificate, Anti-coccidial treatment records, Photographs (ear tag visible), Death register (farm policies), State AH Dept. RHD report (if applicable), Bank details for NEFT.
Claim = SI per rabbit × number of dead rabbits − Compulsory Excess. Each rabbit claimed by ear tag / ring number. RHD batch claim: all photographed dead rabbits with ear tags. Payment by NEFT within 30 days of complete documents per IRDAI TAT norms.
